English 1080 Learning Journal Week 3

A Nights Study In The QEII Library

It should be quiet
But if we heard minds at work
It would burst ear drums

So many people, where are they from?
New Zealand to Newfoundland, Texas to Tanzania
17,000 brought together by the same idea

The library soldiers with the red and blue vests,
Have no time for any talking pests.
Beware!! For talking will give their button a push
And they will unleash their...
                            Shh!                                                               Shh!!                Shh!!
                                            Shh!!             Shh!!

                                                 Shh!!                            Shh!!                 Shh!!
                            Shh!!                            Shh!!                      Shh!!
                                          Shh!!                          Shh!!                                    Shh!!
                                                           Shh!!                            Shh!!

One day the printers all got in a jam
There was too much paper for them to cram
So they went on a diet
But this caused a riot
Cause the students all had an exam

English 1080 Learning Journal Week 2

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

1) The song "Cats In The Cradle" is a song written in the poetry style of open form. There are other forms of poetry present in the song such as rhyme, assonance, and scattered couplets. Throughout the song there are many example of rhyming. Chapin uses words such as 'day' and 'pay' and 'while' and 'smile'. In the chorus Chapin uses assonance through rhyming the words 'moon' and 'spoon'. There are no specific order of couplets in the song, but they are present in lines of two and lines of three. An example of a couplet would be when Chapin writes 'play' and 'today' at the end of two lines , and an example of a tercet would be when he writes 'day', 'way' and 'pay' at the end of three lines in a row.

2) The speaker of the song is a father who is singing about the relationship between him and his son and the regret he feels about not spending time with him. The tone of the song would be sorrow and regret because the father has come to realize that he has never actually spent quality time with his son. Now his son is older the father believes that it is too late to bond. The symbolism of the song is used in the chorus through the lines "cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon, Little boy blue and the man on the moon". This symbolizes his son's childhood and how he was never there to participate in raising him.

3) This song was written by Harry Chapin about the relationship between him and his son. He never really had a chance to watch his son grow up because he was too busy with work, and as time went by when he would be able to tend to his son, his son had no time for him. This is why Chapin took verses from childhood nursery rhymes to show how he was never there to do any of those kind of things with his son. I like this song because it has a catchy tune and the lyrics are very meaningful. A band called "Ugly Kid Joe" has a version of the song, but instead of acoustic guitar it uses an electric one. The sound may be different but it still presents the main message of the song.

Learning Journal Activity Week 1

1. Haiku

The sun has risen
Ponds begin to melt away
Spring has now arrived

2. Limerick

There once upon a time was Jack
Who ate hot dogs by the pack
He ate them so much
Even by the bunch
That he couldn't get out of the sack

3. The form of the Limerick uses the "A-A-B-B-A" to get the rhythm of the poem. Rhyming also gives limericks the ability to be humorous. Limericks are usually very short and get the tone, morale, or story through to the reader in just a few lines. Limericks are a fun and easy way to write poetry.
